William Robert Mercer was the brother of Henry Chapman Mercer, grew up in the Aldie Mansion located at Main Street and Old Dublin Pike. He inherited the Aldie Mansion with his brother Henry in 1917.
Living already at “Fonthill” he turned over his half to his brother. Years later, William and his wife had an idea for their dream house on the back lot of their property.
Once the new Tudor brick mansion was built and named ‘Aldie’, William announced his intentions of tearing down the ‘old Aldie’. His brother Henry disagreed, set against razing the family home.
This separated the brothers until their death.
