Oliver P. James was born in New Britain in 1815. He grew up on his family farm located at Pine Run, being educated locally there.
He began his professional life as a carpenter and builder, but found that not to be his calling. He then began to study medicine.
Soon after he completed his studies, he became the physician at the Bucks County Almshouse.
He was very community oriented person as he was President of Doylestown Borough Council, Treasurer of the Ag Works, Director of Doylestown Bank, Director of the Doylestown & Willow Grove Turnpike Co, and Director of Hope Cemetery.
