Hugh Meredith Jr was born in New Britain but attended school in Doylestown. He would later go on to study medicine under Dr. Frank Swartzlander Sr. He would begin a practice in Doylestown in 1877.
Even though he was a doctor, his real love was Botany. He had a large collection of plants, moths and butterflies from around the world at his home in Doylestown. He would travel to England, Japan and Australia to get specimens for his collection.
His compilation of items was so vast that at his death in 1929, the collection was gilled to the Academy of Natural Sciences.
