William Watts Hart Davis was a veteran of two wars, author, journalist, and the greatest historian Doylestown ever had. He was born in Davisville, Bucks County but moved to Doylestown as a young man to be educated and later practice law.

He and Henry Chapman Mercer were the pioneers that started at the Bucks County Historical Society in 1880 and he became the first president.

He had many books published, his greatest one to our towns history was titled; ‘Doylestown Old and New’. For many years he was the editor of the ‘Democrat’ a local newspaper.

Davis is responsible for the erection of the monument in the center of town, in memory of the fallen men of the 104th Pennsylvania Volunteers during the civil war.
