Cephas Dyer

The earliest settlers to an area just north of Doylestown were the Dyer, Barclay, Michener, Beaumont, and Comly families. The Dyer family owned most of the land in that area and started a village in Plumsteadville called Dyerstown.

This village had the first mill in the area and could have been easily chosen in 1813 as the new county seat. Dyerstown contains nine primary buildings, eight residences and one converted gristmill.

With the exception of a late nineteenth century frame residence, all the major buildings are pre- 1850 stone structures located in proximity to each other in a strong village setting.

Cephas was a descendent of the Dyer family and was the only captain in the Civil war from Plumsteadville. After he was mustered out of service, he and his family would move from his family land into Doylestown.
